I’m originally from Buffalo, New York, but decided in February 2015 to pick up and move across the country to Portland for a new adventure. It didn’t take long to realize this is a foodie town, and I’ve been on a mission since I arrived to find all the best eats. Early into 2019, I decided to create the PDXFoodBro Instagram page to officially document my food journey. I’m a self-taught cook who loves trying new foods, as well as playing around with the camera and social media, so it’s been a pretty natural progression to becoming the “food bro.” Though I’m pretty open to all types of food experiences, I feel most at home in a casual bar with a simple menu, enjoying cold drinks.
Fun fact! I love a variety of foods, but I happen to hate something cherished by most: melted cheese. I don’t eat melted cheese on ANYTHING! Not on pizza, burgers, or nachos…nothing. Mac-n-cheese, what’s that? Grilled cheese, never had it. Feel free to call my melted cheese, you won’t be the first (literally, my friends used to fight over my cheese).
Since moving to Portland I’ve spent most of my time in the Sellwood area. The three restaurants below are a few of my neighborhood favorites. Should you choose to stop by one of them, there’s a good chance you’ll catch me there on any given weekend.
PDX Sliders
PDX Sliders was one of the first food carts I discovered after moving to Portland, and it was love at first bite! They’ve since outgrown the cart and opened two brick-and-mortar restaurants with a third on the way. My go-to order includes the Steel slider (no cheese, obviously), a Morrison slider, fries, and two PBR tallboys. And I highly recommend the flavored margaritas if you’re visiting on a hot summer day.
Zenbu Lounge
2. Zenbu Lounge is where you’ll typically find me on a Friday night, posted up at the bar. Honestly, there’s not much on their menu I won’t eat. Every roll I’ve tried has been a bomb. My usual order consists of the Ginger Chicken meal (comes with rice and sunomono), seared Ahi Tuna Wontons, and at least one avocado roll. And make sure to check the special menu for the Szechuan Brussel sprouts. You'll thank me later, and I normally don’t like sprouts!
AE’S Fried Chicken
I discovered BAE’S Fried Chicken during the early stages of lockdown and it instantly became a favorite. All the fried chicken is tasty, but I always find myself ordering the Jumbo Chicken Strips with waffle fries, and sides of Comeback and Spicy Peach sauces. That alone is enough to feed two people, but somehow the Buttered Corn, Mashed Potatoes w/ Gravy and/or Collard Greens seem to find their way into the order too.
