We always enjoy dining on 8th Street in Boise as there are so many choices. We prefer the more lively casual restaurants, especially those with a bar and friendly staff. Juniper Kitchen & Cocktails has that relaxed, fun atmosphere with a full bar and offers interesting cuisine made with fresh and local ingredients. Exposed brick, a chalkboard wall, the Chef’s Table where you can order the nightly Prix Fixe menu with wine pairings and the inviting bar area give the interior a cool vibe. Second floor dining is perfect for special events, and outdoor dining is available in good weather.
We ordered some specialty cocktails and perused the menu for unique appetizers. Gin Fizz fans will love the Boise-Biotic Fizz made with gin, raspberry puree, agave nectar, lemon, local yogurt and egg whites. Beer fans can try local and seasonal beers on tap, and wine lovers can enjoy wines by the bottle or glass.
The most unique appetizer is Fried Pickles with Juniper Ancho Aioli. We became instant fans! An unusual hint of sweetness and very light breading makes them delicious. Another interesting appetizer is Bison Meatballs made with tomato sauce, fried onion and parmesan served with grilled baguette. We like to try soups and were not disappointed. Both the Seasonal Scratch Tomato Feta Soup and the Lentil Soup made with organic green lentils and herb puree are quite tasty. Our favorite main course is Gin and Honey Glazed Salmon which is served with fried sage and broccoli. The flavors created by the glaze created wonderful flavors, and what a deal for $13.00! We chose the Proletariat Reserve Pinot Noir from Washington which paired perfectly with our salmon.
Juniper Kitchen & Cocktails is open daily, serving lunch and dinner as well as weekend brunch. Happy Hour is seven days a week from 4 PM-6 PM and 10 PM- close with selected cocktails priced two-for-one and certain appetizers half price. Live music on Friday and Saturday nights adds to the pleasure. Restaurateur Kacey Montgomery and Executive Chef Aaron Wermerskirchen have created an enjoyable and easygoing restaurant/bar with something for everyone. We look forward to returning soon.
