It’s dark and stormy Seattle Saturday night. Typical, right? While you might be tempted to order in some Indian food and catch up on Netflix, I highly encourage, no urge you, to put on some nice duds and take your loved one out for a delicious dinner. Now the only question is, where, amongst all of the amazing restaurants in Seattle to go? I recently went on date night with my boyfriend to Spur Gastropub and had a fantastic time.
Spur is a dark and cozy, intimate gastropub nestled in the heart of Belltown on Blanchard, between 1st and 2nd. We walked in for our reservation (if you’re going at peak times, reservations are highly encouraged) and were immediately seated at one of the many tables for two along the banquette wall. As we took a look at the menu, we were excited by all of the options that just seemed to sing off the menu. Intriguing combinations of flavors, in small plates meant for sharing, we were sold. Cocktails were ordered (if you like champagne, I highly recommend Venus in Furs) and we started debating what to order.
After a few minutes of back and forth, decisions were made. We went with several of the appetizer sized dishes, one entrée and dessert.
The highlights of the appetizers were definitely the smoked salmon crostini, almost a take on a bagel and lox, and the chicory salad. The candied walnuts made the chicory salad balancing the bitterness of the chicory perfectly. The boyfriend also loved the pork belly sliders, rich yet the fatty pork belly was tamed by the tanginess of the aioli.
We shared the tagliatelle for our entrée. Let’s talk about this tagliatelle. It’s deconstructed pasta perfection. Served with a poached duck egg, oyster mushrooms, pine nuts, shaved parmesan and parmesan foam, it’s a delight for the eyes as much as the tongue. Once you mix the dish, the parmesan foam and duck egg make a delicious sauce that compliments the pasta, mushrooms, pine nuts and herbs magically. I only wish there were slightly more pine nuts in the dish.
To finish, we had the chocolate, coconut, tamarind. This dessert is probably one of my top ten favorite desserts of all time. I’m seriously going to dream about how perfectly smooth that coconut sorbet was for weeks. The chocolate fudge cake was rich and gooey, while the tamarind caramel beautifully complimented the cake and sorbet, not too sweet and not too overpowering of a tamarind flavor. We debated ordering a second one. That’s how good it was.
If you and your significant other love discussing flavor profiles and unique combinations, Spur Gastropub is a must try for your next date night. Don’t have plans for Valentine’s Day yet? They have a special six-course tasting menu that is sure to be delicious and memorable. With the intimate space, it’s a great place for a Valentine’s Day date too, as it won’t be overly packed with newbies on the Valentine’s Day scene.
Spur Gastropub is located at 113 Blanchard Street, Seattle, WA 98121. They are open daily from 5 pm to 2 am. Reservations available at opentable.com or by calling 206-728-6706.
