Dining Bucket List: New York City Sub Shop

It’s that time of year when the community of Bend hits the slopes (or goes snowshoeing), and with snowy exercise and adventuring comes decadent cravings. Enter New York City Sub Shop, which originated in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and now has three locations in Central Oregon. We’re here to talk about a truly delicious sandwich spot. On a frosty February afternoon, my brother and I headed to the New York City Sub Shop location on Newport Avenue feeling hungry, cold and excited. We perused the menu of both hot and cold sandwich offerings and made our lunch decisions. I opted for a new item: the Harlem, a sandwich stuffed with pulled pork slathered in a sweet, tangy barbeque sauce and topped with provolone cheese, all inside a soft and flavorful Italian baguette. My brother got the Manhattan, a sandwich stuffed with layers and layers of Genoa salami, ham and provolone cheese, along with shredded lettuce, tomato and mayo. We ordered at the counter and found ourselves a table. Before we knew it, our sandwiches were sitting in front of us. Eager to eat, we wasted no time trying to be graceful, because let’s be honest, when there’s a huge sandwich between your hands, the only way to proceed is with a wide mouth and a napkin nearby. I am here to say my sandwich was scrumptious. The homemade bread was crispy on the outside, with a soft, fluffy texture on the inside--the perfect pillow for the heaping portion of pork, cheese and barbeque sauce. I’m positive my brother echoed my sentiments by the very fact that he was speechless, presumably in a sandwich trance.
