very lively restaurant

Prior to moving to Portland, this is the place my family would bring us to while visiting.

Very outgoing staff. Loved the environment. One of my favorite items is the Shepard’s pie.

Banger’s and mash was my choice. Pork, potatoes and pickles. Super good!

Music, Beer, and Food

It was my first visit to Kells.  This may be my new favorite Downtown Portland Pub. There were two of us locals and we stayed after our dinner to hear some live music.  Pat Buckley got on stage at 9pm and sang and played Irish tunes on his guitar and harmonica.  The big room became cozy and we were happy with our beers.  For our dinners, we had the lovely Mussels.  It came with with a kind of cream and bacon Carbonara sauce.  It was delish.  We also had the Irish Lamb Stew with potatoes and carrots.  Both our dinners came with hard to resist Irish Soda Bread. I had to ask for more.  We both tried the flight of Kells beers.  Our hands down favorite was the Kells Stout.  It was dark, rich, and very smooth.  The IPA was great as well.  We enjoyed the Scotch egg and oyster shooters.  My only beef was that it would have been much better if there were 2 eggs. 1 egg makes for only a bite when you share.  As for the shooters, the cocktail sauce had just enough kick and the oysters were fresh, fresh!!  We were very happy with our relaxed friendly service.  Our waiter was a pro and he and the kitchen were fast.  We will definitely be going back to Kells often.
