Barbecue is a deep-rooted American tradition, this is why 87% of the population own a barbecue. It’s not just for the 4th of July though - we love brisket and burgers all year round. Oregon has some outstanding restaurants specializing in the tradition of grilling and smoking delicious food. Delicious dining that is definitely not to be missed!
Alder Smokehouse
Alder Smokehouse, situated at 1055 Virginia Ave, North Bend, OR 97459-3433, offers traditional fare for reasonable prices. They are only open from 11 am - 3 pm though, so you’d better get there quick, as they are known to sell out. Take out is available if you’re not planning on dining in. The restaurant has been open since 1997, and the style is simple and rustic. It may not be fine dining, but it makes up for it in the depth of smoky barbecue flavor. The top seller is the “Cue Pit”, this is smoked pulled pork that comes straight from the pit, piled on top of a telera roll. Sauce is served on the side for your dipping pleasure. Other highlights include the Thunderbird - a smoked turkey club sandwich, and The Smokehouse - tri-tip of delicious Angus beef, with peppers, onions, and cheese. Make sure you book your table early.
The Gray Whale
The Gray Whale at 280 S Roosevelt Dr, Seaside, OR 97138-6742 definitely doesn't barbecue any whales, gray or otherwise. They do however offer some amazing smoked meats and hamburgers. They make all of their own BBQ sauces too, you won’t find them in any store. It is a small restaurant, only seating around 30 people, but a lovely, cozy dining experience. If you want to take advantage of the range of tastes that they have to offer, got for the BBQ Sampler plates, which will set you back $17.99 for 2 types of meat and 2 sides. It will be hard to decide between the racks of pork ribs, the tri-tip, or the pulled pork. There is an amazing array of side dishes, including the homemade clam chowder, mac salad, and mashed potatoes and gravy. You certainly won’t be going home hungry.
Rollin’ Thunder BBQ
Rollin’ Thunder is situated at 77 11th St, Astoria, OR 97103-4185 is a no-frills joint that delivers on flavor. It won’t break the bank either - a smoked pulled pork sandwich, with a side dish, is only $5.75, and the smoked chicken plate is $7.50. No wonder it is a favorite with the locals. If you are ordering the ribs, make sure you ask for the chocolate porter sauce - the rich taste perfectly complements the smoked meat. The restaurant is family friendly, and there are enough combos to please everyone, even the fussiest of children. The cornbread and beans are always a favorite with the younger diners. The decor incorporates some great antique signs and vintage car memorabilia, and Rollin’ Thunder often draws in car and bike aficionados.
