The Where to Eat Guide team mourns the passing of Portland beverage legend Steven Smith, co-founder of Tazo Tea and force behind Stash Tea Co. and Steven Smith Teamaker. Mr. Smith is remembered as a visionary in the specialty beverage market, singlehandedly revolutionizing the tea experience for consumers far beyond the Pacific Northwest. Starbucks acquired Tazo Tea in 1999, introducing Mr. Smith’s unparalleled palate for sophisticated teas to an extremely broad audience. A true global citizen, Mr. Smith’s commitment to quality and passion for excellence is evident in each of his tea blends, as well as in the companies he created. If you would like to honor Mr. Smith’s legacy, please consider making a donation to Mercy Corps’ School Education Retention Program. Proceeds will benefit high school degree completion and college entrance for youth in Assam, India (one of the world’s most important tea producers).
