Sarah’s Raw and Vegan Café: Healthy Can Taste Heavenly

“If you have a good base of nutrition under your belt… It’s easier to live your life; you live it happier.” Sarah Boorstein, the genial health enthusiast behind Sarah’s Raw and Vegan Café, has a reputation around Central Oregon for serving tasty and nutritious smoothies alongside wholesome breakfast and lunch fare. What many people may not know is that a certain C.S. Lewis novel she read when she was a child inspired her to rethink how she ate at a young age.

“When I was a little girl, I read the Chronicles of Narnia. And in the books, the animals are people! I didn’t realize that a hamburger was from a cow; I just thought that a hamburger was from the grocery store or a ‘hamburger bush’. I had no idea,” Sarah admits.

It wasn’t until many years later that Sarah discovered the world of raw eating, and she’s been blending up tasty concoctions ever since. The Café offers smoothies and foods that taste both refreshing and bold, and leave you feeling blissfully nourished. With flavors ranging from Pineapple Coconut Bliss to the medicinal Cold Kicker smoothie, you can have confidence that each sip contains the vitamins and nutrients that your body craves without the often unpleasant taste of good-for-you ingredients on their own.

For instance, one of Sarah’s most popular smoothies, the “Ruby Red”, is as much a treat for the eyes as it is for the palate. Blended with love, this robust beverage is a symphony of flavor, combining sweet raspberries with hemp seeds, creamy avocado, fresh orange juice, banana, beets and a myriad of other goodies. The result is a beautiful Mason jar filled with fuchsia-hued goodness.  Eating healthy can be a hard feat, but Sarah is dedicated to making health convenient for the people of Bend, not to mention making it scrumptious.

With the New Year upon us, now seems to be the perfect time to reconsider how to be healthy in 2015. Sarah happens to have a great suggestion. “In general, the best thing to do is to look at yourself and take away one bad habit. Pick one thing. Anything that you can do to lessen the stress on your body will make you feel better.”

Here’s to health, new adventures and plenty of Sarah’s Raw and Vegan in the New Year.

Sarah’s Raw and Vegan Café is located at 519 NW Colorado Avenue, open Monday through Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm.
