Seattle is a fantastic city for gluten free and vegetarian dining, particularly in the city proper. Whether you’re in the mood for ethnic cuisines with a flavorful mix of spices, or you’re looking for some New American style bites, the following spots are a must to try vegetarian and gluten-free appetizers.

Annapurna | 1833 Broadway | 206-320-7770

Get a taste of the food of Tibet and India at Annapurna, where you can sample gluten free appetizers such as Bombay Wala Pakoras, which is deep-fried (chickpea flour batter with cumin seeds) mixed veggies with mint and tamarind chutneys for dipping. Or, try the Idlis with Sambar Soup: four steamed cakes made from monk bean and rice flour, served with tomato, tamarind and mint chutneys and a delicious sambar soup. These dishes are beyond vegetarian, and are actually vegan!

Blue Moon Burgers | Multiple Locations

Most of the sides at Blue Moon Burgers are gluten free, and since they also offer a gluten free bun option, you can enjoy a great meal without feeling like you have to confirm that no, what you’re ordering doesn’t secretly contain gluten. Their vegetarian options for burgers include a spicy black bean patty (which is also vegan), or a veggie patty. For your side… French fries, tater tots, sweet potato fries, onion rings, garlic parmesan fries, curry fries and curry sweet fries - have at them and enjoy!

Capitol Cider | 818 E Pike Street | 206-397-3564

Capitol Cider is one of those spots that really prides itself on catering to diners with diet restrictions, and there’s a whole host of tasty bites to choose from that are gluten-free and vegetarian. Some highlights include the BBQ Root Chips, which is a blend of yucca, sweet potatoes in a house-made spice blend, and the gluten-free Cheese Curds. The Roasted Sunchokes are also quite tasty, and served with tahini for dipping.

Elemental Pizza | 2634 NE University Village Street | 206-524-4930

Before you sink your teeth into a delicious wood fired pizza at Elemental Pizza, you should get a taste of one of the place’s tasty appetizers. The Fire Roasted Broccolini or Cauliflower and Caprese options are sumptuous and start your meal off with a veggie-centered flavor sensation. You can also enjoy the burrata, just skip the bread if you’re gluten-free. And don’t forget! All of Elemental’s ‘zas can be made with a gluten free crust.

Petra Mediterranean Bistro | 2501 4th Avenue | 206-728-5389

The cuisines of Turkey, Jordan and the Mediterranean are generally gluten free by default, with the exception of pita bread. And many dishes are vegetarian (or can easily be prepared without meat), making Petra Mediterranean Bistro an excellent spot to enjoy flavorful dishes on a vegetarian and/or gluten free diet. The Baba Ghanouje and Dolmathes are some must-try favorites!
